Hytale Zone 2 Mining Route: Best Ore Path for Thorium, Iron & Gold

Best Zone 2 mining route in Hytale using extracted worldgen data. Farm Thorium, Iron, and Gold efficiently in Howling Sands caves with depth bands and desert biome cave passes.

Zone 2 Mining Summary

Best Route

Zone 2 (Howling Sands) rewards players who plan their mining routes instead of wandering blindly through desert caves. The zone has a clear two-phase structure written right into its worldgen: a productive mid-band for Iron and Gold, followed by a Desert biome cave pass that concentrates Thorium at Y 140-200.

Run both phases on the same connected cave system, and you’ll come out with three stacks of useful ore from a single run.

For the full ore database, use the Ore Locations Finder. For all ore guides, see the Resource Locations hub.

A two-phase cave loop through Howling Sands:

  1. Y 60-120 — Iron efficiency + Gold cave overlap
  2. Y 140-200 in Desert cave terrain — targeted Thorium farming
  • Zone 2-exclusive ore (confirmed from game files)
  • Default cave veins across a broad band
  • Extra Desert biome cave pass at Y 140-200

See: Thorium Ore Location Guide

  • Zone 2 default cave veins
  • Desert cave biome pass at Y 60-120

See: Iron Best Level Guide

  • Zone 2 cave Gold at Y 102-110

See: Gold Ore Location Guide

  • Zone 2 default cave veins

See: Copper Ore Location Guide

Start in Desert-adjacent cave systems and sweep the Y 60-120 band. This is where:

  • Iron is most concentrated (Desert cave biome pass)
  • Gold overlaps at Y 102-110 — scan walls carefully in that window
  • Copper appears as common route filler

The goal here isn’t to exhaustively mine at one depth. You’re building familiarity with the cave system and picking up Iron/Gold while positioning for the Thorium descent.

Phase 2: Deep Desert Thorium Sweep (Y 140-200)

Section titled “Phase 2: Deep Desert Thorium Sweep (Y 140-200)”

From your Phase 1 cave network, push deeper into Desert cave terrain and operate in the Y 140-200 band.

  • That window catches the Desert biome cave pass for Thorium
  • Keep exploring branches even when you drift below 140 — default Thorium cave veins don’t stop at the biome pass boundary
  • Mark your return path; deep desert cave systems can branch unexpectedly

Wandering through Zone 2 without a plan usually produces thin results. You end up skipping the Iron density band, missing the Gold window, and descending into Thorium territory too late or in the wrong biome.

The two-phase loop works because it:

  • Maximizes Iron density first (Y 60-120 Desert pass)
  • Captures Gold on the same pass (Y 102-110)
  • Transitions directly into targeted Thorium (Desert cave biome pass)

That’s three separate ore goals from one connected cave loop.

  • Extra light sources — deep desert caves in Phase 2 get large and dark fast
  • Leave inventory room for all three ore types from a mixed run
  • Note cave branch exits so Phase 2 doesn’t turn into an accidental spelunking expedition
  • Treat Thorium as your finish target, not the first thing you chase
  • Going straight to the deepest cave you can find: you skip the Iron/Gold overlap in Phase 1
  • Ignoring Desert biome terrain: Thorium’s concentrated cave pass is Desert-specific
  • Giving up after a dry branch: Thorium also has default cave veins outside the biome pass band
  • Surface-only farming: Zone 2 ore placements are cave-first, full stop

What is the best mining route in Zone 2 Hytale?

Section titled “What is the best mining route in Zone 2 Hytale?”

A two-phase cave loop: Y 60-120 first for Iron and Gold overlap, then descend into Desert cave terrain at Y 140-200 for Thorium. Run it through connected cave systems for the smoothest transitions.

Thorium (zone-exclusive), Iron, and Gold are the main targets. Copper appears commonly as route filler.

Is Thorium the only reason to mine Zone 2?

Section titled “Is Thorium the only reason to mine Zone 2?”

No — Iron and Gold have strong Zone 2 signals too. But Thorium is the exclusive ore that makes a dedicated Zone 2 loop worth the trip.
