Hytale Cave Rex Guide: Location, Drops, and How to Beat the Underground Jungle Apex

The Cave Rex is the apex predator of the Underground Jungle - a bioluminescent nightmare that uses its own glow as a lure in the pitch-black caverns beneath Zone 4. It is one of the hardest-hitting creatures roaming freely in the game, and it punishes players who try to fight it in cramped tunnel lanes. Down here, bad positioning kills runs faster than bad gear.

This guide covers where to find Cave Rex, how to set up a fight with the space you need to survive it, and the confirmed drops.

Cave Rex memory art

  • Zone: Devastated Lands (Zone 4)
  • Area: Underground Jungle / deep jungle cavern routes
  • Priority prep: ranged damage, heals, route markers, escape lane
  • Drops:
    • Heavy Hide x2-3
    • Raw Wildmeat x2-3

If you need the broader Underground Jungle creature overview first, see the Hytale dinosaurs guide.

Cave Rex is tied to Underground Jungle content under Zone 4 volcanic regions, not the surface biome loop.

Practical route summary:

  • Reach Zone 4 (Devastated Lands)
  • Find a volcanic area and descend into deeper caverns
  • Continue until the underground environment shifts into jungle-like caverns
  • Avoid overextending into unmarked tunnels when you suspect a Cave Rex path

Because the Underground Jungle is a maze, route discipline matters as much as combat skill.

Fight Preparation (Do This Before Pulling)

Section titled “Fight Preparation (Do This Before Pulling)”
  • Ranged weapon (highest priority)
  • Strong healing stock
  • Light sources / path markers
  • Building blocks for emergency line breaks
  • Backup food and repair resources
  • Do not pull in narrow choke points if you can reposition
  • Keep enough stamina for disengage windows
  • Clear nearby lesser mobs before starting the fight

The most common mistake is chasing damage in a cramped lane. Cave Rex becomes much easier when you fight in a wider cavern with a clean retreat line.

The Underground Jungle’s cavern lanes are where melee greed gets punished hardest. Keep your distance, chip with ranged attacks, and reset positioning whenever you take a hit. A slower, controlled kill beats any burst attempt that puts you in a bad spot.

If you lose spacing, heal and reposition instead of forcing the trade. Zone 4 boss-type fights are won by consistency, not one big burst attempt.

A good Cave Rex fight starts before the pull. Clear the approach path first so you can retreat without running into extra mobs.

ItemQuantityNotes
Heavy Hide2-3Reliable crafting material
Raw Wildmeat2-3Food/cooking material

Cave Rex has a compact drop table focused on two material outputs.

Cave Rex is worth farming when you can reach the Underground Jungle consistently and survive repeat pulls. If your route is still unstable, you will lose more time (and gear) than the hide/meat payout is worth.

Good times to farm:

  • you are already doing Underground Jungle runs
  • you need Heavy Hide for a specific crafting chain
  • your team can control terrain and recover between pulls

In the Underground Jungle beneath Zone 4 (Devastated Lands).

Cave Rex drops Heavy Hide (2-3) and Raw Wildmeat (2-3).

Cave Rex is treated as a boss, and in practice it functions like an apex encounter because of its threat level and route cost.
